About Our French Curriculum

It is the intent of the French curriculum for our children to:

  • develop French vocabulary
  • develop confidence in simple conversations
  • begin to read and write some in French

At The Colman Schools, our current MFL provision is French. In addition to this, we also strive to offer children wider opportunities to experience a range of other languages and cultures. It is our intention to ensure that by the end of a child’s education at our school, they have developed an understanding of both spoken and written French, confident to speak in French with others and that they are aware of how important other languages can be in their future.

At Colman, we strive to immerse our students in French. For pupils in Key Stage 2 who are learning French, the register, greetings and basic classroom instructions are also given in French to assist with immersion.

Pupils in Early Years and Key Stage 1 learn a range of greetings in different languages that they use each morning or to answer the register. Where we have pupils for whom English is an additional language, we encourage those pupils to teach their peers and teachers greetings in their native language.
